HISTORY

Assin Apimanim Traditional Area - ASSIN MANSO

The origin of Assin Apimanim is APEMANIM, a suburb of Kumasi, Ashante. APEMANIM, as a sub-stool of the Golden stool served as the vanguard army. The reconnaissance detachment of that 'Apemanim warriors' founded the township, ANSA near Fumso, Adanse. ANSA was initially named APEMANIM after their original abode. ANSA danse, was the strategic point on the hill on the Cape Coast to Kumasi highway. The Apemanim warriors with other groups from Adanse, emigrated southwards to their present abode, Assin Apimanim, in the 16th century thereabout and settled permanently. Nana Kofi Mintah a.k.a Nana Kofi Minta Kyeremakuku, the Odikro of ANSA Adanse, led his subjects with his black stool to Assin Apimanim. His Queen, Obaahemaa Amponsa did not emigrate with him to Assin Apemanim.

The Assin Apimanim Traditional Area headquarters(paramountcy) is ASSIN MANSO situated in the centre of the Central Region. It is 36 miles from Cape Coast and 36 miles to Assin Praspo(the river Pra is the boundary with Ashanti). The name "MANSO" was coined from its centrality ('oman nginga son') and as the 'entrepot' of Assin.

Assin Manso was the greatest SLAVE MARKET during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Slaves from Assin manso slave market were shipped from Cape Coast and Elmina castles. Assin Manso was the INTERMEDIATE DEPOT of the British troops during the Yaa Asantewaa war. Assin Praso (the boundary with Ashante was the FRONTIER from where they crossed the river Pra to gfight Asante. The British soldiers that fell in the war were buried at Assin Praso. The cemetary is one of the historic tourist attractions. Before independence, the Gold Coast army used to "sound the last post" on every Empire Day in remembrance of the gallant British soldiers that fell and were buried there(Assin Praso "Frontier or Fort").

The Governors REST HOUSE (Bungalow) at Assin Manso was where the Governor, travelling from Cape Coast to Kumasi, breaks his journey or lodges when touring the area. The dilapidated building (Rest House) will be refurbished as a Research Library on African American history in the nearest future. The Assin Manso "Slave Market" has been developed as one of the historic tourist attractions in the Central Region.
